The Gatsby Unit is a research centre at UCL supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. Our work encompasses theoretical and computational neuroscience, computational statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence; threads that are drawn together by our focus on the mathematical foundations of adaptive intelligent behaviour. Since its establishment in 1998 (with Geoffrey Hinton as the founding director), the Unit has contributed breakthroughs that have helped to shape thinking in neuroscience and AI. We work closely with colleagues in the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre and the broader UCL Neuroscience community, the Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning (including the AI Centre), at DeepMind and other companies, and at research institutions in Europe and around the world. About two-thirds of our PhD and postdoctoral trainees have established successful academic careers, whilst others continue their research in companies such as DeepMind, itself founded by two former Gatsby fellows.
